Jane McGonigal excels at such a deep and broad variety of things that I really should be jealous of her. And I try. But she's so thoughtful and innovative and fun to be around that I just can't keep the envy alive.

blogspot as record of going and doing links to thinking : avant game is the term I've coined to describe my research in digital game studies as well as my creative practice in the area of play. hmm~. It identifies both the body of contemporary play works that I study and the philosophy of game design I am forging. Read more about the derivation and deployment of "avant game."

bio: a Ph.D. candidate in Performance Studies with a designated emphasis in New Media Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. ... active game designer (high-tech, low-tech, and no-tech), currently with 42 Entertainment (named Most Enterprising New Business in the 2005 Best of the Bay). I specialize in massively-collaborative game models and games that are played in everyday public spaces. Some of them have won awards (I Love Bees won the 2005 Innovation Award from the International Game Developers Association, the 2005 Games-related Webby Award, and was honored by the New York Times' 2004 Year in Review. The Go Game was named "Best Way to Rediscover Your City" in 2002).

I've taught two undergraduate courses at UC Berkeley on the relationship between plays (theater) and play (games) and am currently teaching "Game Design as Art Practice" for the San Francisco Art Institute.

I'm a big fan of deep play, dark play, and collective play. huh.
My greatest talent (I've been told) is discovering non-existent signals in the noise of everyday life. It has been suggested to me (more than once) that my most distinguishing trait is extreme enthusiasm. I wear it persistently.
