You’re Not You by Michelle Wildgen (review): Bec is only hired under the condition that she never call 911 without Kate’s permission, and she complies with Kate’s wishes even in the most grim situation. When Bec later faces the disapproval of Kate’s family and friends, who claim they would have called for help if they had been in Bec’s position, it has nothing to do with legal rights and everything to do with love—for in this case, what is loyalty, and what is betrayal?
az- You're Not You: A Novel: Books: Michelle Wildgen CT in rtrns room / paper due July07 / Hired as an inexperienced caretaker, Bec.. physical and mental intimacy to the point where remind herself that she is to speak for Kate, not herself.// finishd 2-3 lovely.

19Apr08 in mode of cataloging. cf [re She May Not Leave. I have just noted associated books - all French - though She May Not Leave is by a (distinctly) English writer Fay Weldon but had in common striking color on spine of hardcover, and I suppose a subject matter of domestic love ~ in any case a "she" in the title: A Cleaning Woman. The Woman in the Row Behind. The Waitress was new.]
now- books alongside You're Not You. ~ I suppose, these are novels read in Chicago and liked ~
You're Not You. Michelle Wildgen. St. Martins. hardcover purchased after finding in Returns room and reading.
An Everyday Savior. Kathryn Larrabee. Four Walls Eight Windows.*do like that name, remind me about the press... this was an advanced finished copy, hardcoer.
Built in a Day. Steven Rinehart. Doubleday. huh big pub but to me was a small (unremarked) book. galley.
Broken As Things Are. Martha Witt. Henry Holt. I feel some affection specially for this one - I really liked it? Morgan Lee and her brother Ginx. the author in the photo on backcover looks to me like Juliette Lewis and she is from North Carolina. "a comedy of sorrows - written with a poet's precision." galley.
A Complicated Kindness. Miriam Toews. Counterpoint. a grey sepia galley. later got one in brighter colors, stripes of pink and her newer book in stripes of blue. less int then? remember, I liked this. girl narrating, there's bite in her voice.
The Only Good Thing Anyone Has Ever Done. Sandra Newman. Harper. this one seems (cld be wrong) to have been popular, where the others went unnoticed. and this makes it less likeable to me? I hope not bcs of the fact of being more read, but bcs makes more apparent a gimmick aspect (bcs seems the gimmick was succesful) ~ a bit too-clever? but remember, I did like it when I read it, was moved, found it funny. recommended to Bobby (the Smiths were visiting, on a Sunday ~ early in Chicago? 2004). Sandra Newman was student of "the late W G Sebald" says back cover. I remember he died when I was in Seattle 2002. had just read at EbbCo? & blurb fr Safran Foer. yes more mainstream than the others, I suppose that is a fact. thoguh I did come across it as a galley, just like the others. not on display but a galley happened upon in the Napoleon room.
...read round the same time, but leading into other associations:
Eagles and Angels. Juli Zeh. Granta Books. blue plaincover gally. I did not remember female author. male narrator Max. I remember this as despairing, well. I thought v well of it. one blurb says it's "the most beautiful and wild German prose in recent years."
--also German, also sad: Summerhouse, Later. Judith Herman. Ecco. stories. small forest green galley. ~my afternoons the same as my evenings~ from the book or just sth I tht around time of reading it, sitting in the pappazam chair as the light changed?
--also a male narrator, somehow similar: Troll. Johanna Sinisalo. Grove Press. I bought this one, was it after reading a recommendation from PaulConstant at ebbco website? also saw as staff pick at politics-prose site. Finnish. like Eagles & Angels, by a female author but what I recall is the ~ maybe: not scrutable? - voice of the male narrator, there Max, here Angel. the troll has a strong smell "like crushed juniper beries." I liked this.
...not to forget, also sad, maybe about despair, after the end. Built in A Day. Broken As Things Are. but this earlier, fr ebbco days, came across as remainder, in the remainder loft. Wide Open. Nicola Barker. Ecco. ...
The Tooth Fairy. Graham Joyce. Tor books. bought used fr Ebbco or did Paul give me his copy? label says 8/27/02 that is when it was purchased by the used dept. I read it at the end of Seattle, maybe the week I was back after starting chicago. associated with Troll bcs of the creature ~ eros ~ fantastical? (this is, but was Troll?)
also ~fantastical~ 'eros-magic': Where Does Kissing End? Kate Pullinger. 1992 Serpent's Tail. purchased used ebbco no I think it was free, one passed on. 1852422777. loaned to Leah to read. "precise, compelling, Pullinger takes metaphor of vampirism.. very sexy depiction of amour fou (mad love).
was there magic in this?, there was right? Alva & Irva. Edward Carey. Harcourt. galley purchased fr Ogara& Wilson, recent at time: March 2003. twins, plasticene city.
links to az, notes from reviews at
also from Paul: Set This House in Order. Matt Ruff. Harper. rather good, re multiple personalities. Paul sent me his battered yellow galley.
and associated ~humorous:
The Keep. Jennifer Egan. Knopf. much excerpted here dlww.
Homeland. Sam Lipsyte. Picador. dlww - followed as it almost won TheMorningNews tournament of books
and from that tournament, I think, I looked into Dan Chaon and liked this well enough:
You Remind Me of Me. Dan Chaon. Ballantine. the title, I liked the title of course. You're Not You. You Remind Me of Me. you, me.
