The sly 'Weeds' keeps growing on me The Watcher | Chicago Tribune :
The scenario the show most frequently returns to has Botwin in a difficult or even impossible situation; she's frequently taking slurpy sips on her ever-present iced coffee, her big brown eyes darting around the room, restlessly looking for a place to land. Though her desperation is obvious, I honestly have no idea what else is going on behind those eyes. me too! The show is starting its third season, but Botwin is still a cipher to me me too me too— and maybe that’s the point. Perhaps Botwin doesn’t know who she is or what she wants, and her lack of self-knowledge — a sort of reckless passivity ok yes — keeps her careening down Bad Life Choice Road.
wow, right on, Maureen Ryan.
It could be that “Weeds” needs Botwin not to be one of those overwhelming, larger-than-life presences like Lorelai. There’s often so much going on in Botwin’s perfectly manicured subdivision that the sharp satire could easily morph into sloppy farce if Botwin were a brassy, in-your-face personality. As it is, she’s the blank canvas yes on which the rest of the show’s characters can project their many (amusingly depicted) flaws.
