Here's the Daily News' story about the near-crash of a KLM jumbo jet from the next day. This story was originally published on Saturday, Dec. 16, 1989.

This fourth book by Yale Younger Poet's Prize–winner Manning is, like his previous books, a unified sequence, though this one takes an autobiographical turn, recounting the Kentucky of the poet's childhood. The poems are friendly, if also full of sadness.

Near here a man and his daughter spent four years living in a homemade shelter. They had a vegetable garden & a rope swing & a creek where they bathed & stored their perishables. A police dog found the man, whose first name was Frank, and his then-12-year-old daughter, Ruth, hiding nearby. A Portland police sergeant arranged for them to live on a horse farm in Yamhill County. -DougClare: Crystal, I usually agree with the panel, or at least Simon, and I'm not just saying this to be nice, or because I'm bias, but I gotta' tell you that I thought your rendition of this song was very well arranged and sung with your soulful self, invested! You owned it. I know I'm speaking as a musician, but I think the audience prob saw what I saw. I thought you hit it out of the park.
y I liked it. wonder wh were the 'problems in there'? well I find this is a fvr among her Idol performances, I like the rhythm, her head moving 2:27.. into 'I went down to the Chelsea drugstore..'

Simon: "..is that, just when you think you've got the competition in the pocket- you've got to dig deep, week after week, you've got to come on that stage, and you've got to kill."
Crystal, shaking head: "I haven't thought that I've 'got' the competition, at all, that hasn't crossed my mind-"
Simon: "no, but I think other people do."
Crystal: "..but thank you- for saying it."
