everybody looks like everybody
watching last night - *everybody* so familiar -
everybody looks like everybody /remind /resemblance
LOOKING LIKE
Awkward (MTV series) - wkp
.. so satisfying bcs on imdb mssg brds easily found cmmts about each person looking like the person I tht of.
Desi Lydic - imdb message boards: Reminds me of...
// teacher [counselor it seems] char looks like jenna elfman - confusing bcs simult checking out new sitcome Growing Up Fisher with Jenna Elfman as mom! so cldnt be? - then tht of recent sitcom w maya rudolf and..Christina Applegate (Up All Night) - yes both mentioned here!!//
Molly Tarlov - imdb message boards: Busy Philips
//Sadie char I recognized appearance & brash like .. Busy Philips! Freaks & Geeks (also Dawsons Creek) //
-Reminds me so much of her. Her facial expressions, her voice, looks, everything
-I thought the exact same when i saw on Awkward! The mannerisms are similar
-I kept trying to think of who she sounded just like and you're right, exactly busy phillips.
//I love how resemblance involves not only still appearance but in expression - voice, inflections, facial, mannerisms //
Jillian Rose Reed - imdb message boards: looks like
// Tamara char not sure if s m looks like as in char here talks very like zosia mamet as shoshana in girls /mentioned again right away, so satisfying!!//
-she looks alot like zosia mamet.
-totally agreee, a little shorter maybe
and did main char Jenna look like someone too? not as exactly but reminding .. Jenna Malone maybe? influenced by the name? char somewhat like jenna malone's char in donnie darko?
...no, as cmmtd on imdb, it's Amber Tamblyn (sisterhood travelling pants) she looks like.
also, int y, samantha mathis (a thing called love).
Ashley Rickards - IMDb ..
Looks like......... - IMDb
also actually I have seen *this* actress - on one tree hill as [wkp:] Samantha "Sam" Walker, a troubled young girl taken in by Brooke Davis who becomes her foster-mother
___________________________________
and also checked out new sitcom ---- this was a Tuesday night, studying 'on tv tonight tvaddict.com and tv listings // on tvguide for this zip there is the option to select 2400 Chestnut !! I'm so on the grid!// as this is first paying any attn to current tv season (or most any tv season since beginning of 2011? looked a bit when first in Atl)
new sitcom About A Boy (eh Nick Hornby though ok j cusack in high fidelity I did like?) - with *very* familiar girl as dating the main char Will. she has dark hair, and I tht might know w other hair color .. and that smile! I tht, yes I *know* this girl = not a resemblance to but is the person herself who I am reminded of. but d n place it .. had to look up. indeed -
Adrianne Palicki. who I like a lot! Friday Night Lights. blonde. Tyra. and then in short-lived Lone Star I liked so much as wife of James Wolk main char. light brown hair. and now dark brown hair in funny show. (and did a stint as Wonderwoman?)
------ now, when first saw Friday Night Lights and several ppl looked like other ppl, esp whatshername actress char Lyla Garrity (she was then in Parenthood & elswhere) looking much like whatshername Blair Waldorf ah ~ Leighton Meester - but these two d n much resemble each other in expression - voice, how move face -- I suppose such a similar still appearance that it is still notable - but I say expressiveness matters more, so these two are very distinct to me - and I hardly like the Lyla Garrity actress - her girlish? voice [ah came across, right: Minka Kelly] - but I very much like Leighton Meester as Blair and before that first seen in veronica mars as ~ Carrie Bishop - thought she was stunningly pretty.
------ and when first saw Friday Night Lights, who was it what actress or char that Tyra char resembled? perhaps not as strikingly?
looking for someone's blog post I recall that cataloged the resemblances (prob also matt damon to landry jesse plemmons), came across this:
http://www.kineda.com/whos-hotter-minka-kelly-or-leighton-meester/
satisfying to read cmmts about really look pretty diff and the cmmts that say LM way more appealing:
-Leighton Meester
...and sorry, but I do see a difference. It's like Fillet Mignon and Spam; and Minka Kelly is the spam.
...Okay, that's wrong. I'll admit that she's attractive, but she's too generic with all the other supermodels out there. A cookie cutter beauty that imitates all the other popular models. A poster girl for conformity.
-Leighton has that average girl look to her, which makes her hot. Not that I think I could hook up with Leighton, but I definitely think I could hook up with someone like her in the real world.
The other chick looks idk... like a barbie doll I guess. Well, she isn't really unique looking, and thats boring.
And I dont really think they look too much alike. They do have some similar features, but not enough that you should mistake them for each other all the time.
-Minka is way over rated. That massive chin and pig like snout /well cmon ugly words not esp as in mean just actually unpleasant words/. Also her character in FNL is simply the most annoy fictional character ever. Leighton is natural. Has a lovely smile, a certain innocence about her and Blair is amazing in gossip girl.
-They're both hot but Leighton is undeniably the more talented of the two. //for sure. and charisma.//
-Leighton meester hands down!
okay! here is the blog post (got by ggl not just: fri ni lights "looks like" - but also: lyla garrity leighton meester tyra
http://annakjarzab.wordpress.com/2008/07/28/friday-night-look-alikes/
indeed I sorta remember that url annakjarzab and I had in mind that the pic of tyra is her leaning against a tree.
anyway says she resembles mandy moore. almost certainly not an impression I had, bcs hardly seen mandy moore just maybe one time part of movie called ~Walk something? where she was sick. must hv been in scanning tv in chicago, early days.
int that d not! incl Landry. jesse plemmons like matt damon. to me was the outstanding resemblance along with the Lyla - Blair. but sure, easy to tell apart, and ppl rate matt damon as good-looking and jesse plemmons as not so? maybe esp in char as Landry. but to me, expressiveness much the same? not sure. but prob more than Minka K to Leighton Meester.

been watching The Wire
am out of loop ... not following any current airing
w mom now seeing some of Game of Thrones (but d n even know wh season 4th? guess I tuned out last season, d n see all of end of third season. not esp of int now? what was my int? the world, the books vs tv show ..
enjoyed which chars: Ned Stark early days Winterfell then w daughters to Kings Landing: What do we say to death? Not today.
so I liked all of season one, didn't I. and have notes here of twop comments?
the first three episodes I think I was very into the details, the shape of each episode {at winterfell, the king's visit w feast, then on road.} the dramatic end to each {Bran's fall .. Sansa's wolf and Bran's eyes open}
season two? - three: liked Robb Stark. rising up. the ravens out to the bannerman, season 1.
jamie lannister I like watching, but again, most of all in season one, at the Starks' feast - assessing the men as opponents, his in-passing face-off with Ned.
w mom saw a couple episodes of The Americans. *
again, was so into season one - the marriage, and her relationship w the civil rights activist guy. very, very compelling.
still seems very well done, but just I have not been following, not into. and seeing parts of now may take interest out, the interest of: What happens. but still, prob worth & would like to watch straight through.
FARGO * new on FX. do want watch. Billy Bob Thornton.
just saw promo new hbo? The Leftovers. * mom said like the french show they're coming back. Le Revenant. The Returned but no, these are people left behind? after? Rapture?

media catch up (post-move)
bks:
tmn tob read comments, check out list for next year.. *
final was kate atkinson Life After Life v jms mcbride Good Lord Bird wh won
((K Atkinson book sounds well done, though character 'Ursula' oddly seems ~too much~ to recall to my mind fr P&P seminal year 1995-96 Stones From the River by Ursula Hegi. odd, bcs just a character given name same as given (first) name author and both re Germany. no one else wld make a cnnxn, right? also I seem to hold it against Atkinson that I did n admire her when went to dinner along w ~Jana on evening of author event for her first bk Scenes fr the museum. she seemed brash ~ uncouth? probably not even. just didn't move me to admiration. some feeling like, oh this is an author. the star of this dinner. wide scarf, actual lady. now perhaps I'd like her. I do v m like Jackson Brodie, or esp Jason Isaacs as. she is whatever else accomplished as a storyteller novelist.))
not esp int in those or most of the other 16 (17 bks total bcs play-in round btw 2 for one of 16 slots)
/fvr cmmtr past yrs whose absence I was wondering about was pleasantly-to-me asked about & pleasantly appeared to make pleasing cmmt seeming same view as me
tmn tob x March 26, 2014 Zombie Round Donna Tartt - The Goldfinch z1 v. 1 The Good Lord Bird - James McBride:
tmn tob x March 26, 2014 Zombie Round Donna Tartt - The Goldfinch z1 v. 1 The Good Lord Bird - James McBride:
-bradmcginty: A number of factors have caused me to sit out most of this year.
1. These books are terrible (for the most part).
2. I am exceptionally busy this year at work.
3. As the proto-hipster, I think this thing might be too big now that people are actually here.
in re -Amateur Reader: Hey, where is McGinty? -Neighbors73: I think he was uninspired by this year's books. -Amateur Reader: Inspired or not, his absence has been noted.
might like to read The Son
and am interested in At Night They Walk in Circles
/seemed of most appeal to me. do believe cmmtrs that maybe not fine in execution. but nonetheless more a book and a voice I'd care for, than other bks here?
need read that first round judgement and comments, plus rvws elsewhere. *
tv:
had been watching ntflx Raising Hope. fond affectionate.
watched a few hbogo movies? oh- Killer Joe (2011) dark. trailer park. very much got in my mind reminded of? ~ coen brothers ish? crossed with? like, natural born killers, no not really right.
watched bcs saw on hbogo & had been seeing matthew mcconaughey in true detective (entertaining but was not as fine to me as ppl seemed to be saying), int. /to see: Dallas Buyers Club. also Wolf Of Wall Str (main is leo dicaprio). maybe Mud (2012).
watched Four Horsemen Now You See Me wh I enjoyed, esp beginning of, with the four doing their tricks. (Isla Fisher ~ but other three I like distinctly.) younger Franco a misdirectioning thief. Woody Harrelson glib show-off hypnosis. Jesse Eisenberg: a magician shld always be the smartest guy in the room. //I think this is a pleasure in detective stories (along w wh is appealing about a mystery: "someone is looking for something, actively"), con stories (The Riches, Weeds), criminal stories (The Assassination of the Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), magician stories (The Prestige). I guess also smart guy like good will hunting stories.
I like the intelligent head-to-side inquiring, watching charlie crews in Life.
I like vm sheriff lamb reading "Veronica Mars is smarter than you." /to watch: the VM movie is out.*
somebody sharp. //what's clear is that not much gets past you.//
and v much like re con grifters get-way-with-it-ers.
.....
The Prestige: the very very long con. your whole life.
the china man who pretended to be weak, always. so could use strength only when doing trick ~ glass sphere held btw knees.
Christian Bale character Alfred Borden. two people (albert , frederick) living one role. living half a life. always. so cld use both bodies as same man only when doing trick: disappear in one spot (the turn), appear in another (the prestige). /the opening~gambit~ is "the pledge.")
Hugh Jackman as american Robert Angier. (and Hugh Jackman as Gerald Root an actor playing as Robert Angier --- layers - versions, much of wh I like here, the density. the Christopher Priest book* into Christopher Nolan movie. rivals, doubles, fronts. Albert/Frederick (*more in post below/back-dated). Angier, Borden. Tesla, Edison. Angier/clone. (will I be the man in the box or the man in the balcony. you are both.) and then, finally, one last long con:
"You - are Lord Caldlow." "I always was."
.....
now am through second watch of The Wire s1 and into s2.
The Americans.
PLL - recaps twopj
-- started to copy all for back half of s4 (?I think) since January bcs this week unexpected & unwelcome news that TWOP closing. content gone as of Friday 4 April. then yesterday evening news that NBCU will keep it online in archived form, much better, thanks!
is it all twopj Jacob Clifton that I wld be sorry not have?
PLL, Gossip Girl, Weeds. /at lst do have notes here dlww and dlcs/
and plus really his writing re any show. recaps Amer Idol v good. recaps Dr Who much praised.
also M Giant re Six Feet Under. ~ "when this show says The End.."
wish also keeping forums up but no. will be up only til 31 May. so at least have a month to read and note, copy-paste. comments from fvr posters. who? right now have Sister Magpie /in The Amers forum she refers ppl to discussion at ~dreamscape, saying: -There's a lot of, well, ME there /so check that out, her name is katya then maybe?/ in mind fr wh recent show?? this past fall did I watch? wasn't true detective .. (wh jacob recapped and was w usual int writing but not esp fvr to me). also have had fvr cmmtrs in past, look in dlcs. again glad have saved a lot of fvr here and there. whole conversations? re Kidnapped, here I think. re Nip/Tuck early days dlww (fr twop? probably). and maybe re Gilmore Girls.. was it her no ~ who did Parenthood first episodes, those were good. something about "socks" is in my mind. either in recapper's name or something she was writing about.
also Couch Baron re vm. and terriers which is on his own blog, I was glad about that when all twop recaps were going to be gone.
also just v useful re detail on any show watching. like right now The Wire. or looking up for mom re The Americans episode. ppl say lots of recaps across internet these days, much brought about by twop; sure a lot of morning-after sum and remarks re a show, but does any other site do in such detail?? recounting of all or nearly all that is shown. so that reading recap really fills in for watching show.
and are there any other forums where so extensive and high signal a discussion?
avclub, sepinwall have decent comments but not much a conversation.
sad that videogum gone recently too. clicked on it just in time to see announcement and goodbye-saying. there it was like avclub comment humor not much conversation but the humor hit the mark for me more generally and there was friendly feeling. and I liked the writing of kelly conaboy (funny) and v m of Gabe Delahaye (recently retired fr site - funny but also unabashed, serious, bold, distinct in forthright statement of own thinking. so ah. he was the other one I was trying to recall, who would I put up there with or near to jacob clifton as fvr internet writing. and now with each their site is gone, over. still have own sites, will write new places. good. though not the same and it is a loss.)
was sorry to find videogum closing.
but televisionwithoutpity ! whole other level, as say. so many years, so many shows, so much discussion. seemed like what was there, at least, would be permanent.
twop forums archiving....
need start saving from twop forums, since offline gone as of 31 May. wait huh that's not just a month from now but two, that's cool. is that right? /yes.

The Prestige bk by Chrstr Priest - discussion
chud- Christopher Priest's "The Prestige" (spoilers):
"The central rule of magic always holds good - what is seen is not what is actually being done."
-Christopher Priest, The Prestige
I've recently had the pleasure of reading the aforementioned book and, having engaged in a brief discussion about it in the Current Reading thread, thought it might be worthwhile to open a thread to pick the book apart.
What did you all think of The Prestige? Theories? Conjectures?
In particular, what did you think of the ending?
What was Priest saying by having Rupert Angier alive and well almost 100 years after his "death"?
The Prestige is very much a smart study in dualities:
What is seen versus what is actually happening misdirection (both in their magical acts and the first person narratives of these unreliable narrators), Borden versus Angier (in their contrasting upbringings, in their ideologies, in their physical appearances, etc.), Bilocation /cloning/, Twins, the actual effect or "prestige" of Angier's In a Flash, In a Flash versus The New Transported Man, Nicky Borden and Andrew Westley /book char I d n recall by name (part of framing story of descendants?/ , etc.

-I think it’s a fascinating and very enjoyable exploration of identity, obsession and the essence and paradoxes of magic. The opening pages of Borden’s book beautifully illustrate the art of the magician. I love the way Priest sets about describing the Pact of Acquiescence. The tacit agreement between the viewer – who understands what he’s witnessing is pure deception, and yet suspends all critical thinking – and the performer. Before reading this book I’d always thought more about the trick itself – the payoff prestige - than the essential showmanship pledge that transforms a clever yet unremarkable piece of sleight-of-hand into magic. Even more fascinating is the way Priest uses these very same techniques to devise a novel that really does pull a few rabbits out the hat.
