Research highlights: Learning from scratch
___________________________________ //note arranged by me for my  discernment of wh is stated.//
Our research group primary int:   developmental cognition and AI     how infant or a robot might acquire …
Our work investigates:   initial motor learning    { first three months of life, the human baby acquires control of its limbs.    6 weeks old      able to gesture at  then soon reach for  objects }
    how can map vision with motor tasks     how such a map can lead to notion of objects
Our primary hypothesis:    that by repeating actions [learning wh] solutions good results    infant can internalize
 correlations of parameters    which reduce degrees of freedom (dimensionality) of the decision space.
visual motion planning,   concepts of containment,    learning mechanics†

 associating words,    metaphorical transfer,   acquisition of syntax.

† learning 'mechanics'
// hmm mechanics cld confuse here.  if intend to say 'ways / skills / modes of learning'.
important as m as can (difficult bcs we use spatial and temporal words for spatially or temporally ~neutral concepts)
to be explicit-distinct talking re spatial physical material visual.
because:  hypothesis is / involves
how spatial physical visual  mapping  can develop or enable or enact the conceptual.

 nb my † discovered as option-T, looking for different symbol to use for footnote, bcs I use stars for emphasis incl for wh I like.  and a while back had maybe accidentally discovered that option-v makes a √  wh I tht of as a check but suppose is actually a division sign, or rather derivative sign.  notation.
try various option-key strokes.

// came to this research site of amitabha mukerjee
by way of the book masterlist component of it.

book masterlist -
 book excerptise: a book unexamined is a waste of trees
 https://www.cse.iitk.ac.in/users/amit/books/master-booklist.html
How this project started
i find it difficult to read a book without a pencil - or increasingly - without a text editor where i can take notes... over the years, thousands of extracts and quotations and reviews have accumulated in a huge file. after every book, there would be lots of excerpts...
i ended up writing a fairly elaborate script on my favourite editor, emacs, that converted my raw text file into a webpage. thus was born book excerptise. This was around 2004. Since then more than two thousand books have been added to this site...
Sometimes people ask me about copyright, since many books are _extensively_ excerpted. Where the excerpts are so extensive, they are almost all from various sources on the web. I am not sure that the presence of excerpts on the web justifies this concatenation at a single site, but if anyone objects, I will be happy to replace the texts with their links. The problem is that in the ten years that this site has been up, hundreds of links have died or moved...

so.... may be int to look around further this Book Expertise site, his notes with excerpts...

I came to that master bookslist wh is also the page you reach just at ... amit/books
as page header  link      bcs had come page of notes excerpts book Altered Carbon via ggl.
was lkg up Altered Carbon after reading bit  found rulit    bcs saw tv series adaptatn planned starring Joel Kinnaman  who I lkd up bcs reminded of him   Holder in The Killing
 a bit, not close resemblance    by Michael Dorman  in Patriot.

 re Altered Carbon    -   here, Mukherjee

mounts a transparent critique of many contemporary practices. one group that comes in for considerable discussion are the catholics, whom one character calls "goddamn freaks" who have been "grinding us down for the best part of two and a half thousand years... they've stood against every significant medical advance of the last five centuries." but fortunately, the Catholics don't believe in storage. {wh I gather is the system of criminal sentencing, wh I got curious about.  I d n read far d n get to much info about, is one of reasons bothered to ggl re book.   so I guess criminals just ~ come to ~  ** I am generally interested in experiences of "coming to"**  to find have missed months or years?   int as punishment.  yes cld be a loss.  but might not be.  especially since hv view of life as potentially much longer.   so huh.  no supposed rehabilitation, since not even any experienced time passage.  maybe the disorientation of coming to, in a later time, wld influence you twd being different.  and wld be deterrent if you do value your life span.  instead of "doing time" / "serving time"  you simply *lose time* }  When {*if*, right?  or is there some reason other than conviction of criminal guilt that ppl necessarily get put into storage?} Catholics are put into "storage" they never come back. That's why, despite not practicing birth control, there aren't that many of them.
...
materialism   here th the consciousness or min  nothing separate from the brain  (monism)   implemented in material terms  a stack
if you are rich and motivated, you can buy insurance to ensure that in case of severe "sleeve"  [body] "organic damage"  your stack can be reinstated, possibly enhanced with cyborg extensions, based on it most recent backup.  this process is re-sleeving. damaging a stack is the most violent offence.
...

sleeves and stacks
welcome to the universe of the 25th c., where consciousness - a.k.a. brains - are digitized. The digitization happens via a small device called a stack, implanted at the base of the brain. The body is the sleeve, and you can fit any stacks onto any sleeve - sort of like lego - though they can take a lot of adjusting... killing the sleeve is a serious offence - organic damage, but nothing compared to damaging the "stack", "RD" or Real Death as they call it on old planet Earth; that is true murder.

  ______________
... and elsewhere re Altered Carbon
by Richard Morgan(with a middle initial 'k' wh irks me as distractingly associative I imagine on purpose w phlp k d)

sfsite.com/03a/al123.htm   review by Victoria Strauss  //good writ! look at other reviews by Victoria Strauss here, but I suppose all sf may not be m I know..  //

Especially impressive is the world building. Morgan's 25th century Earth is a fascinating construct, both in its vividly-depicted futuristic strangeness and in what, under all the technology, hasn't changed.

Earth's complicated history, as well as the histories of a number of colony worlds, is revealed in controlled snippets throughout the book -- bits and pieces that solidly establish atmosphere and context, yet are
glancing and elliptical, and leave much unexplained. For the most part this mosaic approach works very well --
after all, this sort of vibrant half-knowledge is exactly what one has about the real world. //y very good//

//and excellent info-organizing efficient-telling plot sum:

In this far future universe, human consciousness has been digitized.
Every human being is implanted at birth with a cortical stack, which records every second, every thought, every experience.
If you have the money, you can be brought back to life after you die by the simple expedient of implanting your stack into a new body, a process known as sleeving.
The penal system no longer stores live criminals, but only their digital selves.   { ah ha there it is, re storage as penalty. }

... Wars are fought by troops whose minds are needlecast and downloaded into bodies on-site, the Envoy Corps, the enforcement arm of the despotic UN Protectorate, which rules Earth and its colony world.

Takeshi Kovacs is former Envoy. Envoys' specialized training and neurochemical enhancements, designed to make them {capable of dealing with resleeving then sudden action, despite disorientation} perfect long-distance warriors and flawless investigators, also place them just this side of psychopathic.
Many Envoys, when discharged from the Corps, turn to crime, and Kovacs is no exception.
Sentenced on his home planet to more than a century of storage for his part in a heist, Kovacs wakes to find himself in Bay City, Earth, housed in an unfamiliar sleeve. He's been retrieved and hired by industrialist Laurens Bancroft, whose fabulous wealth allows him, among other things, to maintain a clone facility that renders him and his family effectively immortal. Kovacs' assignment: to investigate Bancroft's death in a previous body, which the police have ruled a suicide but which Bancroft is certain was attempted murder.
