The Trail of Lonelygirl15 Daily ["ToLD"] - Los Angeles Times ---I like the usage of abbreviation "ToLD" -- "ToLD spoke to wtinesses on the scene" -- and implication this will be a regular feature (really?) By Richard Rushfield, Times Staff Writer - August 31, 2006 if like millions of understimulated, entertainment-starved consumers, you live your life from viral eruption to viral eruption ... The Trail of Lonelygirl15 Daily will bring you all the latest on the hunt for truth of what's been called the "Watergate of the Internet." Check back to latimes.com/entertainment for updates from the front lines of Internet hoax debunking.
The Grass Beneath Her Feet: In an e-mail to ToLD, Jessica, a 23-year-old law student who is an active driver of the lonelygirl15 forums sums up her further environmental studies thusly: "The 'indoor' location is a structure somewhere in the San Mateo/Mountain View area. We are 100% confident of this much. The 'outdoor' locations were filmed in the Sierra Mountains. Several people claiming to be botanists have credibly concluded in the forum that the 'hiking' video was filmed in the northern region of the Sierras (hence closer to the Mountain View area), and the 'swimming video' much farther south, in the southeastern part of California. In either case, then, the outdoor videos were filmed in the Sierra Mountains" The smoking gun here being the "Mountain View" connection — not far from home of YouTube HQ.
No Comment, Yes Comment: On lonelygirl15's MySpace profile, a young man named Johnny posted the following comment, which suggests a personal acquaintance: "what are you doing? this has gotten crazy! call me back!" Johnny lists his interest as "making films" and features on his page the logo for a company called Long Shot Productions, which has its own MySpace page, which appears to be that of a Michigan-based maker of viral Internet videos. When contacted by ToLD, Johnny replied by saying: "i am sorry i am not at liberty to share any information with you. i apparently signed a Non Disclosure aggreement in feb 06. which legally keeps me from responding. again I apologize." this is funny to me.
One of the leading theories about these videos is that they were all filmed at once over the course of a day or a week. Hence the absence of any reference not only to world events but to the kerfuffle the videos themselves have provoked. Bree goes about her life like any precocious home-schooled webcam girl, without the tiniest nod to the fact that the Internet is about to crumble under the weight of the mystery she's provoked.
Until now. In the opening seconds of the "Cookie Monster" video, Daniel lies on Bree's bed reading what is very clearly the current issue of Rolling Stone, putting the first time stamp on the entire series, and at first glance, putting the single-shoot theory to rest.
But...some suggest that the cover image is in fact digitally inserted into the video. Message board member Mettle writes:"But no one would hold up a magazine like that (notice the hand angle and the length of time it's up) unless they knew they were going to Photoshop it later."
Or...lack of plot development suggests that this video could have been shot recently, specifically to create a time stamp, and inserted into the sequence without disrupting the story chain.
We'll be back Tuesday with another Trail of Lonelygirl15 Daily.
