It would be much easier if networks could take a hint from the British model and do shorter runs and stagger new shows throughout the year. This does not mean, btw, that the 'seasonal' aspect to TV is lost - they still roll out new shows in September/October, Jan/Feb and May/June (dumping most of the junk in the summer), it's just easier to sample more shows because they're not frantically throwing 'em at the wall to see what sticks.
...I think that HBO has maybe come close to combining the best aspects of the British model and the American model with their 13-episode runs, so hopefully some day the non-cable networks will see the light too.
