Here's my account from 2002 on what she was really like in person:
The Smith from the clips, all hammy vacancy on camera as she desperately tried to emulate Marilyn Monroe, seemed disconnected and strangely subdued in person. Also -- and there's really no nice way to put this -- she comes off as dumb as a post.
-- HOLLYWOOD, Florida - is your first clue.
It is a VERY sad and tragic story, no matter how you approach it. An exploitative 'house of mirrors' at the seedy end of the celebrity boardwalk. ..We want for something more (even from ourselves), but often settle for less. The story here is greed (and faux glamour), and how it taints all of our social and civil institutions. She wasn't Marilyn Monroe (nor was Marilyn Monroe, really), any more than Madonna had been. That's how dusty and faded the media glamour playbook really is. Objects in the mirror may be larger than they appear. It depends on the mirror we choose. Time to move along, and to desire better for us all.

Colbert and Gervais could still delight via YouTube, while the others would need a new trade.
