Editorial: Welcome to Beyond the Couch, the Online Journal of the MNCOP:
The tension between the inner and outer worlds, between the psychological and environmental, has bedeviled both social work and psychoanalysis for nearly a century. Psychoanalytic theory has now evolved to a point where it can encompass this dichotomy. And social work practice offers a unique opportunity to explore this duality. As Clare Winnicott observed:
“The social worker.... starts off as a real person concerned with the external events and people in the child's life. In the course of her work with him, she will attempt to bridge the gap between the external world and his feelings about it and in doing so will enter his inner world too.”

Bridging the gap between the internal and external will be a primary editorial objective of Beyond the Couch. Besides applying psychoanalytic ideas to social work practice, we will explore how social work practice can enrich psychoanalytic theory and practice.
