The Great Debate: Season 1 vs. Season 2 -p15 - VM TWoP Forums:
lillian6: I’ve been lurking here for some time now but I've decided to come out of the shadows in order to defend S2. English is not my mother tongue so I apologize for any grammatical errors. Anyway, I’m surprised by the lack of appreciation of S2 here in the forums, because I think that it’s one of the best seasons of any TV-show I’ve ever watched. When I started watching Veronica (from the pilot) I found it well written and acted and much more ambitious than your regular teen series. Having said that,
S1 is still relatively light and too safe, predictable and sugar-coated for my taste. yeah, lighter cases, more cutesy maybe? sort of sweet too. Rob Thomas has said that he originally intended to sell the show to HBO and I think the fact that he has been forced to hold back by UPN really shows in S1. S2 is much darker and edgier and I think that really suits the mood of the show and makes it really stand out and rise above its teen genre.
The reason I finally got hooked on S1 was when Logan became multidimensional.
yes. He’s one of the best and most complex characters I’ve ever come across and I love the fact that in S2 he’s become such a central character. Many have complained about the lack of LoVe (yes, I’m guilty of being a shipper but in a sense that I enjoy all interaction between Lo and Ve) in S2 but on the contrary in my opinion their relationship has been on the surface in nearly every episode and I think it’s delicious how the writer’s have toyed with them and made their relationship one of the main themes. I have no problem with them hating each other just as long as they’re not ignorant of each other. yes.
There’s been a lot of talk on how S1 is more character driven than S2. S1 is definitely driven by Veronica’s character but the other characters (except maybe Logan in the end half) are only in the background and there to serve the plot and to be Veronica’s sounding board. Although I like Veronica, in S1 she often pisses me off by her self-righteousness, childishness and her double-standards. Also I can't completely identify with her undying love for the Kane siblings, because Duncan is such a dull character and Lily (although an interesting character) was such a selfish bitch. Judging by the old Veronica we've seen in the flashbacks, the tragedies have really shaped her into a much more compelling character. One of the aspects I adore in S2 is the number of wonderful and fascinating characters (Logan, Lamb, Cliff, Dick & Beaver, Haaron, Weevil, Mac, Vinnie) and the fact that we get to know and follow them on their own not just through Veronica. I’ve never watched a show before with so many great characters! I even like Veronica more in S2 because she’s more mature and (paradoxically) honestly and openly a bitch. I agree with you though that her lack of interest is a small minus for S2 and I miss the VMVOs because through them Veronica feels much closer and they're a good way to access her thoughts and feelings.
The dialogue in S2 is funnier than in S1 and I can't get enough of the intertextual references.
like what like what I appreciate as well that Lily's murder is not forgotten yes I like how things go on after the end and there's a strong continuity with S1 through the visits of Haaron and Abel. I agree though that there could be more interaction within the ensemble. I didn't like the Meg's baby plot line either but at least we got rid of Donut. It would've been better and more realistic though if Veronica and Donut would have just drifted apart. yes. could have been good to see them realize that they were holding onto former feelings no longer current. a more innocent time or whatever. I think it's understandable that they got back together because of all the unresolved issues but they were so obviously not suited for each other that I would've hoped they would've just broken up without all the kidnapping drama.
What disturbs me in S1 is the fact that the key mysteries are too simple and they’re dealt with in too small doses at a time.
yes. Too much time is dedicated to irrelevant MotWs. In S2 I love the interwoven, complex main mysteries and that even most of the smaller cases somehow are related to them. yes. Also I like it that most of the MotWs are related to the main characters and not just to some guest characters, this actually in my opinion makes S2 more character driven. yes. S2 sort of reminds me of Babylon 5. Because the structure of Babylon 5 consisted of several interwoven plot lines and in the end of the series even the smallest details proved to be essentially important and one could see how everything was connected. I don't think it's a bad thing that Veronica isn't so affected by the main mysteries because it would be quite ridiculous if a personal disaster after another would follow her. And who knows, maybe in the end when the culprit(s?) and the motive(s?) are revealed, they have a big significance to Veronica after all. I also think it's nice that for a change Weevil and Logan are more involved in the mysteries. All in all, I think S2 like S1 can only be fairly judged when we've seen all of it.
Oh dear, this was long, sorry!

Benji: No need to apologize, lillian, for your English or post length, I wholeheartedly agree!
good.
Just a general question after last night, since I know it was so polarizing: Is anyone changing their minds either way on this topic now that we've kicked into the final stretch?
