delicious support forum - What do you dislike about the new design?:
-nathanbowers:
* Overall design: All the text and clickable items are LOW CONTRAST and SMALL. Things are generally hard to see, and specifically the relative importance and grouping of things is lost.
* Overall design 2: Why is everything so small and tightly compacted? See how tight the top navigation, "signed in as" bar, and search bar are? Why? The worst offender is everything from "my name's bookmarks" down to the first bookmark. TOO TIGHT. Open up the design, let it breathe!
*"Inbox" sucks as a label. I've got a million inboxes. What was it before? "Links for you"? Much more descriptive. agreed. ...but, comment next page:
--"Inbox" is annoying for an existing user because we've made a mental distinction between "links for you" and and email "inbox", but it makes more sense to a new user because that's the underlying behavior -- it's *like* emailing someone a link -- not to mention, "for you" is commonly used for recommendation engine results, and not for user-to-user functionality. that's a good point.
* The difference between "viewing my bookmarks" and "viewing everyone's bookmarks" modes needs to be more obvious. yes.
*Hate the default "you haven't uploaded a picture yet" profile picture. I know there's this theory where you make default pictures ugly so users feel compelled to change it, but that is just too awful. Use Flickr's please. Whoa, nevermind, that's *not* a profile picture, it's a "you are in your personal area" icon. this is funny bcs I think he means the icon wh I think is meant to be a bookmark but it does first look like an angular-cartoon profile
*Hate the "type a tag" area. Before we had a nice big target to type into. Now I struggle to find it, let alone click into that tiny area.
*The main nav is weak. What's with the light gray "bookmarks" main nav dropdown? Super tiny white text on light gray.
* The available sorting in the "sort my bookmarks" dropdown is almost useless. alphabetical.
*The "heat" of popularity counts sucks. You need a color besides medium blue to dark blue.
* The bookmarks are too mashed together. I can't tell which popularity number goes with which bookmark by the time my eyes scan from left to right. The whole bookmark area is just muddy. The structure is so unclear I can't look at it.
*Overall design 3: Did I mention that everything is too small and tight? Click targets are just so small and I have a hard time reading text but also 'reading' the structure and relationships of everything on the page. yes yes yes yes

-I posted about what needs to be fixed on my blog: http://nathanbowers.com/design/deliciouscom-redesigns-screws-pooch There's a screenshot with an overlay showing what needs to be fixed.
Found another problem: the left pointing tag labels on each bookmark imply some kind of hierarchical or breadcrumb relationship, but there is no such relationship. CONFUSING.

-every time I look at the tags to the right of a bookmark, I think they are nested, because of the "arrow" effect of the buttons, like the one on the right is a parent of the one to the left of it. I'd rather see them as just text links. Also, I'd like to see them left-justified under the link. Right-justified is harder to read anywhere you use it.
I think the Home, Bookmarks, People, and Tags hmm so have made these 'the main nav' = three axis of site: links, users, tags buttons at the top of the page are too heavy & distract from the list of bookmarks. I'd rather see them just be text links, or all be light gray so they "weigh" less. yes.

-The gray used around the tags underneath the bookmark takes up too much space and makes it harder to figure out exactly what else an item is tagged as. I find the background coloring distracting and the little arrow, while visually interesting, spaces things out too much on items that have multiple tags so that in some cases they take three or four rows where before they'd take maybe two. Also, moving the tags over to the right is difficult to follow visually and isn't where most people would intuitively look on a page for a feature that makes the site as useful and integral as it does. It'd make more sense if they were to the left and the edit/delete was on the right, since I won't really be choosing to edit something until after I've read the taglist. I do hope they respond to all the complaints about this by switching these.

-The one thing I most dislike is the shaded little boxes for the tags when you're looking at a bunch of bookmarks. I much prefer just having text, and I liked having it right under the bookmark rather than off to the side so I could easily just look down and see what tags I'd applied.

-I rarely add descriptions to my links, but I make sure I tag them correctly. In the new interface, tags are right-aligned, and I have a widescreen monitor! Because of this, I find it hard to scan down lists of links. I have to keep looking to the right to figure out what some of my links actually are. Also, what happened to the timestamps? It's much harder to scan my network feed now.

-karmakaze:
I'm willing to look at the new design for a bit before I decide I hate it, although my initial reaction is negative. But the link color is awful! It's too pale to be easily read and you can barely tell the difference between visited and unvisited links! At first I actually thought there was no difference between visited and unvisited at all; I finally stared closely and can kind of make out the difference, although if I didn't already know, I'd have no idea which tiny variant in shade was meant to indicate which state. lighter if visited. (problem is, the blue link color already pretty light). What's so very wrong with blue and purple anyway? with bars of pink-red. yes it was pretty. It's attractive, easy to read, doesn't clash with the color scheme, and is easily understood.
I also note that on the popular page, the 'people' box is way too prominent. The first thing the eye should be drawn to is the link text itself. The box draws the eye to the right, away from the core information to something that's not really all that important. Not that the number of linkers should be left out entirely, but it's less important that (a) what the link actually is and (b) the tags attached, both of which are totally eclipsed right now. yes yes yes.

-I think the emphasis (stronger colors) is on the wrong things. The footer ?oh dark blue bar bttm , bold blue like the counts and the bookmark counts seem to draw my eye away from the most important stuff: the links. yes. lots of comments pointing this out.

-A bit gentle too heavy on the visuals: the page needs to "breathe" a bit more.
Also: some fonts are too small (e.g in the Action box) and there is not enough contrast

-treatuslikegold:
My very first reaction was that the flashiness is distracting, and I miss the simplicity of the old design. I guess it might not be so distracting if I get used to it though. Hmm. After some poking around, these are my main non-aesthetic problems:
I use a specific order of tagging so I can get basic info about my bookmarks just by scanning down the left hand side of the page, and the right alignment of the tags is really inconvenient. My ability to use my delicious quickly & easily is pretty severely impaired by this, so I'm really hoping we at least have the *option* of viewing our tags left aligned.
I second the desire to have the 'unbundled tags' group return to the tags column.
yup: 1) too flashy, distracting, miss the simplicity & usability. emphasis on wrong things. diff to scan. font 2) tags on right rather than left. 3) no unbundled tags. (& tag column order - no one likes the top ten, esp being at top) does this sum the main complaints 1 2 3 ?

-I need a way to look at my unbundled tags without pulling up the all tags list (since that's over 1000 tags) oh right that's the only way to see those at all, in context of all tags, wh for many ppl is way too many

-Make the link count less prominent, and put it and the tags on the left underneath the bookmark. Make the title bolder and more noticeable. Those are my suggestions. sum

teneagles good sum of majority complaints:
1. I very, very, very much want 'Edit/Delete' and tags to switch sides -- it's now quite difficult to scan quickly through titles and tags, as the eye has to skip back and forth from far left to far right.
2. I want the 'unbundled tags' bundle back, as does every other user I've spoken with.
3. I'd like *my* bundles at the top of the page, where they used to be. After all, those are the ones I use most, and I honestly don't care about seeing my top10 or ALL my tags.
4. I don't dislike the redesign as much as some others seem to, but I do feel that it is unnecessarily cluttered and less friendly to the eye. Small type, little lines cutting across the age everywhere, just too much stuff.
5. I LOVE the 1000-character comment field, though. Thank you for that.

..............
in sum (what I've read) ~
hard to read, scan.relationship of elements unclear. ~this is a problem w whole design but:
esp: tags should be on left not right. (switch placed w edit/delete.)
esp: text color (of links = page names) needs to be bolder
&want 'unbundled tags'
&want 'top ten' optional

...& I dislike the icons
several comments negative re 'person' icon ~ not seeing it as bkmrk (wh I think it is but maybe I am wrong? starting to think I'm wrong)
-The symbols [icons] on the upper left are not really informative and are a bit distracting. Maybe they are useful for new users or people who don't use the site a lot. But maybe if they are grey instead of blue they still give an idea which site is opened, but re not as distracting as they are now. yes grey instd of blue wld help.
& -The green colour that is used a few times seems to be out of place. Orange colour (like the RSS symbol) would suite better and would be as striking as the green colour.
yes. the green is bothersome on the pop-up window (when adding a bkmrk via browser button). orange wld be a bit better.

icons for each link below user name:
bookmarks | network (users y follow) | subscriptions (tags y follow) | inbox (links for you).
bkmrks lks like a person in profile. network lks to me like a snowflake. subscriptns is a bird?
anyway these d not need be conceptualized this way, as departments of the site? ~ what is this way?
I like better on old dlcs that it was visualized on the page as the url: dlcs / user / tag.
what call this difference? like dos command line v windows desktop. ~oh: transparency.
how removed is interface from system nuts&bolts. how directly are the elements represented.
................

-You know what makes way more sense than this new design?
http://del.icio.us/{username}/tag
That's all it was and all it needed to be.

- the old "heading" with "del.icio.us / username / [___] by Displayname" was so clear, beautiful and easy to use, where beautiful may be very subjective, but I really liked it a lot. It was so straightforward.

-I also miss the big chunky address at the top of the screen where tags could be typed, why so tiny now? I almost thought this feature was removed entirely because I could not find it.

-jaden:
Here are some suggestions:
* Move the EDIT | DELETE to the right side, change to icons, or do something so they don't take up so much space all on their own line. and move tags back to the left. That will allow more bookmarks to fit
* Darken the link color yes this might be the most important.
* Add timestamps back (make it an option?)
* Reduce the number in the top tags section when editing a bookmark in full screen mode. It looks like all my tags are there.
* Remove the extra row of links below "user's bookmarks". It's redundant with the top box links.
I like the general look of the new site, but it could use space better. I also like the speedy search. Much, much faster!
Thanks for all the hard work to get this out. that was a good post. substantive, good-natured.

**good point re redundancy of top box links & links below user. but, that row of links is the remnant of former design. new design, links below user:

mcassimatis's Bookmarks

Bookmarks | Network | Tags | Subscriptions | Inbox

so wld rather have this row and get rid of the top box links but those top boxes are part of the whole re-conceptualizing & making easily usable (but less transparent) so probably here to stay. in wh case I'd actually rather keep the redundant old school extra links so I can ignore those boxes. ~am finding the old design is still there, amid all this...
(oh and boxes d n contain 'inbox' duplication - but that appears in upper right, probably to resemble other sites where a link on upper right takes you to your email inbox - it is annoying to have things made multiply available on the page. and cluttered. but again, I'd like to keep the old school link row as a consolation.)
...actually, I come to see better (notes below) now that these are not redundant. top box links are re site-in-gen and lower links are wrt user on view)

old dlcs:

All your items (8604)

-
oh and I remember long ago (so if my first date tags were z0508 then it's 3 years I've used dlcs) when there was the promise of continued development, I hoped for more manipulation of tags. we can do only simple intersection _ + _. I'd like to do be able to add more tags to that or to rule out a tag ( _ -_) but dsn't lk like anyth like that was built in here. so what gain? I'd rather have the slower search. bummer.
oh wait. tried & failed at a tag minus tag, but then found that can add multiple tags to intersection (that's new right? or could you before?) so, that's sth good:
mcassimatis: books + * + design

-Things I liked: Browsing cross-referenced tags is also improved. that's the _ + _ that I am talking about, right? Adding bookmarks straight into site (sans buttons) is a much better design now. but where is that? oh. upper right below search box has 'save a new bookmark' (this used to be 'Post') together with 'create a public profile' and 'tag options.' takes you to a multi-step entry: first page y enter url... then maybe it pulls up the title info? yes. so = better design than you manually entering title of your own devising. Bundling of tags on the save page. Alphabetical listing.

oh right it's called tag combination...
What's New on Delicious:
Tag Bar: Use our new Tag Bar to quickly navigate your bookmarks by using tags and tag combinations. this Tag Bar basically is what was at the top of page in old dlcs, just as visual of the url. oh and what I'm referring to as whole reconceptualizing is this 'navigation':
Navigation: We've organized the site into three main sections: Bookmarks, People and Tags. When you are logged in, these menus the boxes give you quick access to your Bookmarks, Network and Tags pages.

-Is there going to be a way to make the top bar user-centric again? It makes it much harder to navigate an individual user page in this style when all the links at the top link to the main site pages.
main complaint in this regard is that "HOME" takes to front page rather than to own bookmarks. (dlcs logo to left of HOME also takes to front page anyway. shld change so home takes to own bkmrks if logged in. or just take away the 'home' since can click on dlcs logo to go front page and on bkmrks to go to own bkrmrks.)
I rarely, if ever, go to the main page as it mostly doesn't have any links I'm interested in. My network and searching have always been better and now they're harder to navigate than ever.
well I am coming around on this. the main nav top bar is for browsing the site.
versus: if you just want to use it wrt own bkmrks, just use the links below your user name. these are for browsing relative to each user: their bkmrks, their network, their tags, their subscriptions.
so actually not redundant. top box links for site at large. links below user name for wrt that user.
this is straight out of the old design. and below it, the tag bar also. is what used to be the main thing. so, just learn to focus on that. the old site is in there, it's just smaller...

-The bar where you can enter tags (e.g. popular >> "your tag here" oh, on popular page, this wld let you view all links fr everyone w certain tag. - and of course, on own page, wld view all yr links w certain tag) is too small. That's a great feature that needs to stand out more.

they've just (is this main thing accomplished in the interface by the design?) added a top layer of navigation for the site in general ~ this is what was not there, or at lst not loudly advertising itself: the options to explore popular or recent bkmrks, or to explore users or to explore tags.
