We're gonna hate ourselves in the morning ...but right now it's still the night [Clifford Curry, We're gonna hate ourselves in the morning] Yoni's Living Room Soul Chart - melingo.com/thesoulnet/jukebox From the Dark End of the Street.
In the Mines, In the Mines , In the Blue Diamond Mines (prvs post) not: In the Pines In the Pines where the sun never shines
oh baby! oh what a crying shame - to let it all slip away [Mavericks, What A Crying Shame]
wish I had a dime - for all the bad times [Guy Clark, Anyhow I Love You]
on Shape I'm In squirrell oh was playing all Texas ~born singer songwriters well no wonder I was caught. Rodney Crowell maybe my new fvr, forget wh song.
and this I liked a lot:
I wanna go home with the armadilla = YouTube - Gary P Nunn w/ Jerry Jeff Walker - London Homesick Blues good country music from Amarillo and Abilene - the friendliest people and the prettiest women you ever seen
like Lyle Lovett's:
At a dance hall down in Texas That's the finest place to be. The women they all look beautiful And their men will buy your beer for free.
= That's right! (You're not from Texas). But Texas wants you anyway.
----One of the best songs about Texas attitude. Just the right amounts of elitism (you're not fr texas) & 'ya'll come see us' (but texas wants you anyway). yes right! that's what I've always liked in that song. you don't wear your hat right. but c'mere I'll show you how. and buy you a beer *for free*.
It's not really country, it's really just Lovett, which is a style unto itself. yes right on.
this from this blog post:
STICKY DOORKNOBS: "The friendliest people and the prettiest women you'll ever see"
which I came across looking up that lyric. he's got a list of Texas songs, great. including That's Right (You're Not from Texas) as well as London Homesick Blues:
Texas, like only a handful of other places, can be felt in a song, and better felt in a mix of songs. There's just something about this place that inspires songwriters and singers to do what they do best. So, to tell you about this great state with the help of others, I give you the Texas 25 (or 30 maybe), a list of contemporary songs that perhaps best let you know what it's like to be here. The best songs are written about our people and the allure of Texas. Some of the best are written about the indescribable attraction of West Texas, where I live ~Odessa I'd say there are four pre-eminent Texas vocalists: Willie (who needs no last name), George Strait, Pat Green, and the inimitable Lyle Lovett, who just drips Texas.
no Billy Joe Shaver here, or... ? ... or Michelle Shocked "West Texas Highways" pretty song. does include Dixie Chicks (Wide Open Spaces - which I never imagined as Texas, but as a girl who left home, where home was maybe Texas, and is now in ~ Montana.) as did squirell duneed (Cowboy, take me away .. closer to heaven above & closer to you .. ) and much new to me, along w a few familiar the lyle lovett and lubbock no luckenback, tx:
"Luckenbach, Texas," Waylon & Willie -- They don't make places as laid back as Luckenbach anymore. In Luckenbach, they wanted it to stay that way, so they put it at a place on the map that can be impossible to find if you take the wrong turn comin' out of Fredricksburg. This is as close to a Texas standard as you can find among contemporary Texas tunes. well this one I know & like. well I know it from these radio shows, most likely. "out in Luckenback, Texas, ain't nobody ~calling your name.."
"That's Right (You're Not From Texas)," Lyle Lovett. A lot of attitude to go with this one. Just the right amounts of elitism and "Ya'll come see us." It's not really country, it's really just Lovett, which is a style unto itself. One of the best songs about Texas attitude.
"London Homesick Blues," Jerry Jeff Walker. Poor guy stuck in England and all he can think about is goin' home to the armadillos and good country music from Amarillo to Abilene. Texas after all, has "The friendliest people and the prettiest women you've ever seen."
"What I Like About Texas," Gary P. Nunn (Nunn is with Walker above link to youtube doing London Homesick Blues). Texas songs really and truly don't get much better than this. If you're a true Texan, it'll bring tears to your eyes.
"Texas," Chris Rea. The "Fool If You Think It's Over" man yearns to get out of the hustle and bustle of whatever nameless big city he's in and move to a place where there's big long roads, beautiful sunsets and people not bumpin' together at every turn.
"Texas," Willie Nelson. No one's more qualified to sing a song about Texas. Willie's take on the state -which is an entirely different piece than Rea's "Texas"- is haunting and beautiful with great lyrics, including: "It's where I want to be/It's the only place for me/My spirit can run free/in Texas."
"Whiskey River," Willie Nelson. Anyone who's ever been to a Willie concert knows there are few moments as Texan as the opening strains of "Whiskey River" when that giant Texas flag is unfurled. Absolute beauty. listen to this..
"El Paso," Marty Robbins. As much about Mexico as it is about Texas, Marty Robbins tragic story is a beautiful ode to western music and one of the best story songs to ever come out of the country & western genre. sounds like tvx ~? a story and border country ~
"Carry On," Pat Green. A great roll-down-your window-and-crank-it-up country song. like "Where there's a road!" by ~Robbie Folks I think. maybe about Tx, I don't know. and I don't think I know any of Pat Green.
"Texas In My Rearview Mirror," Mac Davis. You just thought it was better somewhere else. Mac Davis' ruminations about having to get outta Dodge and missing it terribly once he's gone.
