tob 3/12 Paying Guests vs Brave Man Seven Stories High
tmn tob 3/12 SWaters Paying Guests v Brave Man SSH
//these notes fr iphone. v rough & incompl. on 3/13 my I think hv some re Marche. I liked his distilled ~ read this if you: want to spend time w these woman who talk like this [Paying Guests]. ~ know who S_____ Z____ is [Brave Man] /I'd add "or care" ///
-melanie c: I'm certainly disgruntled by the first-round seeding all round here. One reason I'm sailing through perfectly on my picks thus far is that there isn't a lot of intertextual narrative happening, I think.
>What if we'd looked at Adam v. Paying Guests, and had yet another platform from with to {discuss} Schrag's "but this is how you introduce less mainstream characters into the world!" POV?
(to wit: no, you can just make a book with a bunch of lesbian murderers who get away with it //huh - the two guests? well now am int in book, though disint by litmus test presented in judgemnt of whether want spend time w women who talk as quoted, so maybe just want read plot sum ~ wkp**// and the murder isn't even the point so much as the struggle against parental-societal expectations and the constant navigation on the rvr of 'is she just using me to get rid of him?' /huh, the female guest w r t the daughter?/ )
>What if Brave Man & Wittgenstein had their philosophical heads bashed together? Besides my having a day off from having an opinion because I'd read neither, it guarantees one of the lesser known titles will continue in the tournament. //y ~ but seeding is always 1 v 4 not 4s tgthr (why is th? in basketball? d n want waste games on less top teams? unless a surprise underdog victory right at the start?) well Brave Man is a 3//
What if Brief History was up against Dept of Speculation? It would just be fun to see the big guy beat up the little guy. (I didn't like Dept.) /ah. just won my int. see wh y say abt it tomorrow. /am generally int in cnvrstn abt it to see if confirms or complicates my ngtv rxn to sample I read/
Point is, the first-round brackets so far have led to some predictability and, I think, to some judges (today, for example) who seem more coin-flippy than engaged in considering the books against each other. //good intertext here, though, in cmmts. not only of this year's bks but even w ref to shared 'backlist' of last 10 yrs (potentially - most d n refer th far back. key aspect of wh makes this cnvrstn special //
-zach: I would have loved a "Lesbian Battle Royale" or a "That's Not My Philosophy" or a "Violence: Caribbean Style" //Seven Killings. and Untamed State, wh is in Haiti, and the title of wh repels me, though I guess roxane gay is not writer of sort th title to me suggstv of//battle.
-BillHughes: My read of the left side of the bracket is that it seems inevitable that we'll end up with Bone Clocks and All the Light, and then whichever one gets knocked out will come back as a zombie.
//well dang. & alt winners for semifinals wld be? Seven Killings and Paying Guests. wld be more int in th. (though not as m as ATB,S).//
I think the right side of the bracket is a tighter field, and therefore a better book (IMHO) isn't going to make it through.
** Paying Guests. ok maybe int. 1922 London ' A love story, a tension-filled crime story, and a beautifully atmospheric portrait'
-If nothing else, this comment thread has taught me that I vastly overestimated the instantaneous name recognition of Slavoj Žižek.

Slavoj Zizek is a Slovenian Philosopher and cultural critic who is probably one of the most popular philosophers on the planet, in terms of exposure and reach. He's more than willing to delve into the general pop culture and talk about the philosophical ramifications of remaking movies and if we've run out of "real" things to talk about. His point of view is Marxist. Neat dude with a funny accent.

There's a documentary about him on Netflix called "A Pervert's Guide to Ideology."
still to read re Doerr/ & cmmts Wed eg re: -I'm a pretty fast reader, but it's not something I'm proud of. It's actually one reason I find the "audiobooks aren't really reading" argument from yesterday to be so befuddling. Audiobooks force you to listen to every word! No more lazy scanning!
