I want to be part of this family.
Steve Carrell:
-Oh, no. If you're color-blind, you can't fly jets, Dwayne. oh baby.
-We've got an emergency back here.
and then Dwayne sitting down the hill off the side of the road, yells at his mom. She doesn't know what to do. Dad says, I'm just worried about the time. he's very funny there. rg is right greg kinnear is good. and he says Olive, you want to try talking to him? and mom says, there's nothing to say. but Olive goes down in her short shorts and go-go boots (are they go go boots?) and kneels next to him, and puts her head on his shoulder. and the camera stays on them like that. and Dwayne says, Okay. Let's go. and they head up the hill, Dwayne holding a hand behind Olive's back and then he picks her up -lifts her up in front of him- and carries her a few feet up the hill to the top. aw brothers and little sisters.
and they all go push the van and jump in! I love it, makes me smile.
and then the vw bus careening around the hotel and everyone shouting, Olive says You missed it Dad!, Dad saying It's a one-way street I can't go back, Olive says Oh!
and again Dad is likeable "We're gonna make it Olive!" grinning at her -"put your seat belt on, baby!" - "just a little bump!" as he drives over medians.
and then Steve Carrell out first and running running running into the hotel to the registration.
and Mom's great. she's so real with her kids. and picking Olive up in & out of the van. and "Mom, she eat's ice cream!" - "I heard!"
oh I love ... what? this odd family all dealing with things together and not accepting the normal ways that would interfere with their getting there.
...............
yay! the end with dad then uncle then brother then mom with a squeal jumping up on stage to dance with daughter - makes me so happy I cry
worth owning for this happiness, see if dvd goes on sale yes yes definitely, there are two commentaries that I bet are good, one with just the directors and one with them and the screenwriter.
from that commentary, opening of the film on the image of Olive watching the pageant on tv:
Beginning with those eyes and this desire - it's her wanting this experience that drives the whole movie. The whole movie is going to be about the whole family serving what they see in her, her longing. -yes yes exactly
then they all agree that they like that Dwayne does go get the bucket of chicken when his mom tells him too. I like that too! I was totally glad he didn't do the obvious totally sullen rebellious way, that he was decent toward his mom.
and just watched the four short alternate endings, was thinking it would be different versions of that dance scene but no that was set I guess at the climax and the question was what to do as the final scene after that. which makes sense to me, that is a question. you've had the happy happy funny moving climax and now how do you show the moments after that, where does the family go from here and how does the audience feel leaving the theatre? so they kept going back to the drawing board on it. and then thought how the van was an important character and needed to be seen again. yep. and just need a nod to grandpa and then they all push the van one last time. which is right, it's perfect. I think. it ends great, the music with each of them running. yay!
